if it wasn’t already apparent, you should know i have a thing for the desert—the American desert that is, the landscape of dusty plains and rolling mountains dotted with sagebrush and cactus that runs from Texas to California. so, please: let’s hold our breath until we can all afford to spend a week at the Amangiri resort, situated in Utah on border with Arizona.
“Architecturally, the resort has been designed to blend into the landscape with natural hues, materials and textures a feature of the design. The structures are commanding and in proportion with the scale of the natural surroundings, yet provide an intimate setting from which to view and appreciate the landscape.”
“Other pieces included a new copper Tom Dixon table lamp, four melamine dining chairs from Design Within Reach, and a white vintage Saarinen table she had bought through Craigslist for $900, which immediately became one of her favorite possessions after discovering when she went to pick it up that it had belonged to the novelists Jonathan Safran Foer and Nicole Krauss.”

coco & kelly posted pictures of this stunning living room a few weeks ago, and just as i instantly fell in love i realized it was very similar to another room i’ve had bookmarked for over a year.
yes, the second, from Apartment Therapy, looks rather low key when compared to the first (one is Herve Van der Straeten’s Parisian apartment, the other a young couple’s rental in Chicago) but the effect of high-gloss mustard punctuating the contrast between buttery whites and deep navy blues are persistent in both. perhaps i will start with an over-sized plush fur carpet… once i’m sure the dog is completely out of his chewing stage, though.
this makes me realize that when i do have a house, it’s going to have to have lots of tiny rooms and cornered off spaces–so i can put up all the wallpapers i am obsessed with, without becoming a younger Lee Radziwill.
last week in small-talk cocktail party land, i spoke to someone with a friend who “just moved into Philippe Starck’s old house in LA…”
(oh, and of course the house was fully furnished.)
all swoons aside, for those of us who aren’t in reach of Starck’s hand-me-downs, or even able to rationalize purchasing a Louis Ghost (me!), there’s some new visual satisfaction–with a slight bit of onomatopia: the Haaa!!! and Hooo!!! lamps. today and tomorrow has all the details on this design collaboration.
